6 Android-Friendly Crowd-Funded Projects for September

It’s a new month, the back-to-school time for many students of all ages, and another exciting time for Android enthusiasts. Over the past few weeks, several interesting crowd-funded projects have popped up on Indiegogo and Kickstarter and it’s time we took a look at the most interesting ones that you can pledge for.
Read on to discover them all, and keep in mind that, as with any crowd-funded project, you have to exercise your better judgement and no outcome is really guaranteed.

1.Pressy

Pressy falls into the “Why did no one think of that before” category of accessories. It’s a small button that plugs into the 3.5mm headset port of your phone and acts as a configurable controller. One click toggles the flashlight on, a click-and-hold turns silent mode on or off, a double click snaps a photo. But Pressy is configurable with many more options and a lot more possibilities. It’s quintessentially the button that Android manufacturers aren’t adding to their devices, and a way to quickly access several functions without fumbling on the touchscreen. But Pressy is also removable, switchable between devices, and most-likely future-proof no matter which Android phone or tablet you buy next. It literally took me less than 5 minutes to go for the Early Bear Special pledge for $15 but that’s long gone now.
Pressy is a small, non-intrusive yet very versatile button for your phone.
Entry price is currently 17$. Estimated delivery is March 2014 and the project is already fully funded with 38 days to go.

Entry price is currently $99. Estimated delivery is November 2013 and the project is already fully funded with 26 days to go.

2.Sigmo

Sigmo is the ultimate tool for world travellers, people with multi-lingual coworkers, those who are moving into a new country or live somewhere where several languages are spoken. It’s a small clip-on accessory for Android and iOS that simply listens and translates between two different languages. With support for 25 languages and a promise to make it work in offline mode as well as online, Sigmo breaks the language barrier almost everywhere. It also works as a handsfree unit for your phone, a Siri controller, and with the 3.5mm plug, it should allow you to learn languages without disturbing people around you.

3.Parashoot

ParaShoot 2.0 is the second iteration of the (previously failed) crowd-funded Parashoot project. The 2.0 version corrects a lot of the previous one’s problems and has quickly been funded and quintupled its pledge goal in a few days. Essentially, this is a small portable, wireless, video recorder. It records at 720p 30fps, and can be clipped onto clothes, placed on a desk, in a car or attached to various other objects. It also comes with a choice of fun and quirky custom skins to help it blend — or stand out! — in any environment.

4.iDoorCam

iDoorCam is the secure and geeky door peephole that you never knew you needed. Install it instead of your regular doorbell, and you will have not only that but a night vision camera to see your visitors, a speaker and a microphone to communicate with them, and a motion sensor to detect movement. Best of all? It all works wirelessly with your Android and iPhone, so you have access to your home’s security and visitors whether you’re inside the house or travelling thousands of miles away. There’s a lot more to iDoorCam, like multiple users, a do-not-disturb mode, and several options that make it a well-rounded home accessory.

5.Emotiv Insight

Emotiv Insight is the most exciting yet hardest to describe project on this list. Put simply, it’s a brain activity monitor that wirelessly transmits that data to your smartphone and translates it into information that can be used to control objects, improve performance, or understand your brain more. You’ll have to watch the video and read the project description to see what the Insight can do, but it really sounds, looks and feels like science-fiction brain control. And it’s awesome!

6.Beddit
Beddit is the sleep and wellness tracker that resides in your bed — instead of your wrist or clothes like the various Fitbit and Jawbone devices. For that reason, Beddit can be simpler to use, more accurate, and most importantly it won’t disturb your sleep or require you to manually log data or remember to wear it at night. The unit is installed under your sheets and tracks your circadian rhythm and sleep structure, the bedroom environment, snoring and breathing habits, as well as your resting heart rate. The device communicates with your Android or iPhone, to graph and track all your data, and can be set to wake you up at a specific time or intelligently when you are sleeping lightly within a preset time window.
The Beddit sensor stays under your sheets and communicates sleep tracking data to your smartphone.
